MK CALLS FOR RETHINK ON GROWTH IN BIOFUELS



On the 11th September, Members of the European Parliament will be voting on proposals for all petrol and diesel used in transportation to contain at least 10% of biofuels by 2020.

Whilst Mebyon Kernow fully supports renewable energy, biofuels are not the answer to tackling climate change. The deforestation caused by the rush to grow crops for biofuels often involves cutting down forests and woodland to create arable land, which actually increases the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere.

Mebyon Kernow – the Party for Cornwall has called on Post Office Ltd to totally rethink the extent of its proposed closure programme.

Forty-nine branches have been ear-marked for closure, while another thirteen could be replaced with mobile services.

In the by-election for a seat on Camborne Town Council, MK's Zoe Fox came a very commendable second - only 15 votes behind the Tory victor. In a hard-fought contest, the Conservative candidate polled 304 votes, MK managed 289 ahead of the Liberal Democrats on 263 and the Labour Party on 161.

Mebyon Kernow – the Party for Cornwall has condemned the announcement from the Boundary Committee for England that it will “not be able to complete the work” necessary to create new seats for elections to the new unitary council by May or June 2009 and that the elections will have to proceed on the basis of 82 Councillors for the new authority with the same electoral divisions as the current County Council.

Commenting on the recent visit of John Healey, Local Government Minister, to Cornwall, Cllr Phil Rendle, Mebyon Kernow’s Constitutional Affairs Spokesman, said:

“If the Minister is really aware of the strength of opinion in Cornwall among its people and its district, parish and town councillors, he will have left Implementation Executive Chairman Cllr Whalley with a good-sized flea in his ear.”
