National Minority Statement

On 24th April 2014, the Cornish were recognised as a national minority by the UK Government through the Council of Europe’s Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities.

The official government press release stated that “the decision to recognise the unique identity of the Cornish, now affords them the same status … as the UK’s other Celtic people, the Scots, the Welsh and the Irish.”

But, ten years on, central government continues to fail to treat Cornwall equally with the other national parts of the United Kingdom.

On 20th April 2024, MK published a public challenge to central government, MPs, would-be MPs and others, to commit to fully meeting their obligations to the Cornish as set out in the Framework Convention.

Please join us by using the below statement as a campaigning tool for greater parity with the other Celtic nations.

You can forward signed copies of the statement to Mebyon Kernow, and we will send a copy onto your MP to challenge him to back our list of demands.

Alternatively, you can go direct to your own MP and challenge him to back our list of demands. If you get a response, please share it with us.
