Proposed controls on holiday lets does not go far enough

The Department for Levelling Up, Communities and Housing has launched a consultation into a proposal to make “planning permission a requirement” for new short-term holiday lets. There is another consultation on a registration scheme for such lets, which has been launched by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. At today’s meeting of Cornwall Council, Mebyon Kernow councillors Dick Cole and Loveday Jenkin proposed a motion seeking greater devolution for Cornwall. The motion argued that Cornwall merited parity with Wales and Scotland in terms of devolution and sought to “commence negotiations for a more meaningful devolution settlement similar to those enjoyed in the other Celtic parts of the UK (such as a National Assembly of Cornwall or Cornish Parliament).” The motion was lost by 38 votes to 36. Following the announcement from the leader of Cornwall Council that her administration will not be pushing ahead with the proposal for a directly-elected mayor, Mebyon Kernow has called on all politicians in Cornwall to work together to secure meaningful devolution.
