Councillors representing Mebyon Kernow are challenging the Conservative-run unitary authority to do all it can to find vital funding to safeguard the future of the Royal Cornwall Museum.
This follows the announcement that the Museum had failed to secure funding from Cornwall Council through the Culture and Creative Investment Programme, and there have been subsequent reports that the facility could be at risk.
The councillors have variously written to the relevant portfolio holder Carol Mould and the leader of the Council, Linda Taylor.
Speaking on behalf of MK, Cllr Michael Bunney (St Mewan and Grampound), who has worked as a history teacher, said:
“The Museum is such a fantastic facility and at the heart of our heritage offer. I almost see it as the flagship of Cornish heritage. I know these are tricky financial times, but the message I am receiving is that the Museum may have to close, which would be devastating.
“Mebyon Kernow councillors are calling on Cornwall Council’s Cabinet to find a way to support the Museum and to prevent its closure.”
