Mebyon Kernow – the Party for Cornwall has challenged the UK’s new Prime Minister, Liz Truss, to deliver on the myriad of promises that the Tories have made to Cornwall.
In a statement issued today, MK’s leadership team said: “Liz Truss has become Prime Minister at a time of national emergency for Cornwall, that is simply unprecedented in modern times. There is the massive cost-of-living crisis, a housing crisis like never before, and increasingly unequal communities, while public services are under significant threat.
“Action is needed now to freeze energy prices and bring energy companies into public ownership, and to intervene in Cornwall’s dysfunctional, out-of-control, housing market. Support for public services, in particular the NHS and social care, must also be a greater priority for the Government.
“The Conservatives have made numerous promises to Cornwall in terms of fair funding, their ‘levelling up’ agenda and the full replacement of EU funds. It is time that these promises were kept.
“In addition, eight years ago the UK Government recognised the Cornish as a national minority. Conservative Ministers promised that they would treat the Cornish the same as the ‘other Celtic peoples.’ This has simply not happened. It is about time that the Government did what it said it would, and it could start by delivering a meaningful devolution settlement to Cornwall – not a weak ‘county deal’.”
MK’s leadership team comprises Cllrs Dick Cole, Loveday Jenkin, Andrew Long and Michael Bunney.
