Manifesto commitments in 2024 for Cornwall?

Comment from Cllr Dick Cole – Leader of Mebyon Kernow

Just prior to Christmas, the Prime Minister confirmed that the next General Election will take place in 2024. This was hardly surprising, as the poll could take place as late as January 2025. At least it rules out campaigns over Christmas. While most people are assuming that the election will happen in the autumn, there has been much speculation that it could be as early as May. The announcement of a spring budget has done nothing to dampen political gossip, though…

Cash and favour honours are a disgrace

A wide range of people have been recognised through the latest New Year’s Honours List. As in previous years, many of the “great and the good” are again among those receiving awards – surprise, surprise – as are numerous media professionals, celebrities and sportspeople.   I am trying not to sound too cynical and I agree that many people being honoured have done amazing work in their chosen professions or for  charity or their local community. How can we not be…

MK comment on level 2 “devolution deal”

Comment from Cllr Dick Cole – Leader of Mebyon Kernow

On Tuesday 28th November, the ten-strong ruling Cabinet on Cornwall Council  voted to proceed with the so-called “level 2 devolution deal.” As someone who has campaigned for meaningful devolution for Cornwall for my entire adult life, I have to say how desperately disappointed I am at what has been agreed. It does not include the transfer of far-reaching powers from Westminster to Cornwall as has happened in Wales and Scotland. The deal is simply a range of accommodations between central government…

A view on the “deal” from Cllr Dick Cole

Comment from Cllr Dick Cole – Leader of Mebyon Kernow

The UK Government published its “level 2 devolution deal” for Cornwall on Wednesday 22nd November. This follows on from the decision of Cornwall Council’s ten-strong ruling Cabinet, in April, to not proceed with a weak “level 3” deal that was linked to the imposition of a mayor. This latest deal is even more insubstantial. By the time that this column has been published, the deal will have been considered by the unitary authority’s Customers and Support Services Overview and Scrutiny Committee…

Mebyon Kernow briefing on “level 2” deal

Mebyon Kernow has produced the following briefing on the so-called “level 2 devolution deal” for Cornwall. We are desperately disappointed at the content of the “devolution deal” published on 22nd November 2023. It does not include the transfer of far-reaching powers from Westminster to Cornwall as has happened in Wales and Scotland since 1999. The deal is simply a range of accommodations between central government and Cornwall’s unitary authority. The deal does reference Cornwall’s distinct heritage, culture and language, as well…
