Black and white poster featuring the Cornish flag and the words "Assemblies for Scotland and Wales – Why not Cornwall?"

This week, Mebyon Kernow members and supporters are marking the 75th anniversary of the founding of Mebyon Kernow at the Oates Temperance Hotel in Redruth, which took place on 6th January 1951. Thirteen people were present at the meeting and a further six sent apologies. The first leader of MK was a woman, Helena Charles, who also became the first MK member to serve as a councillor, when she was elected onto Camborne-Redruth Urban District Council in 1953. A tribute to former MK Chair Loveday Carlyon

Everyone at Mebyon Kernow is extremely saddened that MK’s eighth leader, Loveday Carlyon, recently passed away. Loveday was MK’s chair between 1986 and 1989. A formidable campaigner, she promoted a series of high profile media campaigns. This included criticism of mass tourism and she helped MK force a public inquiry seeking a Cornwall-only constituency for the European Parliament in 1988. She was also prominent in opposition to the over-development of Cornwall – she was secretary of Cornish Alternatives to the Structure…

Global Cornish – Kernewek Ollvysel

Comment from Cllr Dick Cole – Leader of Mebyon Kernow

House of Lords is an anachronism

Comment from Cllr Dick Cole – Leader of Mebyon Kernow

At that time, I described the second chamber as “an anachronism that has no place in a modern democracy,” and I set out my frustration that 38 new peers had been created. I wish to return to this subject as another 34 new peers have just been announced – 25 from the Labour Party, five from the Lib Dems and three from the Conservatives, plus one cross-bencher.…

Devolution will equal increased investment

Comment from Cllr Dick Cole – Leader of Mebyon Kernow

The Autumn Budget included the creation of a Kernow Industrial Fund worth £30 million over two years. Cornwall’s MPs have been widely commended for their efforts in making this happen. John Brown, Chief Executive of the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, was among those making positive comment about this and the launch of a Critical Mineral Strategy. He stated that: “There is a real palpable sense that Cornwall has arrived into the lexicon of Westminster and we have done so not as…

No to Devonwall – good news

Mebyon Kernow has welcomed the announcement from Steve Reed, the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, which rules out the threat of a Devonwall Mayoral Strategic Authority [MSA] being imposed on Cornwall. In a letter to the leader of Cornwall Council, Cllr Leigh Frost, the minister stated that the UK Government “is minded, on an exceptional basis, to work” with Cornwall Council “to explore designating the council as a Single Foundation Strategic Authority.” The letter added that: “Any…
