Mebyon Kernow has hit out at the failure of the UK Government to invite representatives of the nation of Cornwall to the first gathering of the new Council of the Nations and Regions, which is meeting in Scotland today.
Party Leader Cllr Dick Cole said: “It is approaching two months since group leaders at Cornwall Council wrote a collective letter [dated 16th July] to the Prime Minister requesting that Cornwall be represented on the new Council of the Nations and Regions. It is worrying that this is not happening – especially given the Government’s obligations to the Cornish through the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities.”
The Prime Minister is today being quoted as saying: “I’m convening the first ever Council of Nations and Regions, because it is when we work together in the spirit of genuine partnership, that we can deliver the real change people want to see and improve opportunities for all.”
But that “spirit of genuine partnership” has yet to extend to Cornwall. Keir Starmer is also being quoted as saying: “Whether you’re in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland or England …” Just like his Tory predecessors, the Prime Minister has a “four-nation” approach to the governance of the UK, which excludes meaningful representation for Cornwall.
Please lobby Cornwall’s MPs for proper representation for Cornwall.
