The UK Government has just published a press release about the budget and what it means for “Cornwall and the South West.” It includes confirmation that the Cornish language will be protected through part three of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. It has previously only been covered by part two of the Charter.
The relevant statement was as follows:
“Promoting Cornwall’s strengths and investing in its opportunities also means championing its unique identity. The revival of the Cornish language in recent decades has strengthened its culture and sense of place. Kernewek (the Cornish language) is a living thread, connecting communities to their shared history and strengthening their pride in their place.
“That is why the Government will be lodging a request with the Council of Europe to increase the UK’s formal recognition of the Cornish language, under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.”
