Today is the tenth anniversary of the recognition of the Cornish as a “national minority” through the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities.
The UK Government made it clear that the Cornish would be afforded “the same status … as the UK’s other Celtic people, the Scots, the Welsh and the Irish.”
But there has since been a decade of inaction and a manifest failure from the Westminster establishment to deliver on their promises from 2014.
On St Piran’s Day, Mebyon Kernow made a public challenge to Westminster political parties to confirm what they are committed to doing to deliver on the articles of the Framework Convention for the Cornish.
Sadly, we have heard nothing from the leadership of the Conservative and Labour parties; and we wish to repeat our challenge to Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer.
One decade on from 24th April 2014, it is time that Government Ministers, MPs and parliamentary candidates confirm what they are committed to doing to deliver on the articles of the Framework Convention for the Cornish.
